Dangers of toxic ingredients in your skin care products and why you should avoid them

Many people rely on skin care products to minimize their aging rates with no knowledge of its constituent ingredients and this can be dangerous to the health. Using skin care product that contains toxic ingredients could cause some skin diseases. Below are some bad effects of using skincare product that contains toxic ingredients. ➢ Impending skin repair. Having toxic ingredients in your skincare product can weaken your pH level. Your skin’s ability to heal highly depends on your pH level. When your skin’s pH is low, the skin’s ability to selfheal becomes broken. ➢ The reduction of skin protective barriers. The presence of toxic ingredients in your skin care product can lead to the wash away of your skin’s healing lipids meant to protect your skin. Toxic ingredients also accelerate your aging rates, producing wrinkles and drier skin. ➢ Disrupting your skin’s natural pH. The top layer of your skin comprises of some acidic components known as its pH. Your skin has a normal healthy pH range of about 4.5 to about 5.3 that makes it slightly acidic. Using a skincare product with toxic ingredients will leave your skin pH at 6 to 7 which is slightly more alkaline, resulting in your skin working overtime in order to get its normal range back. In this process of overworking, an excess of oil is being produced which could lead to redness, acne, and rosacea. Having read the implications with using a skin care product with toxic ingredients, I want to give you examples of some of these toxic ingredients.

> Our skin is highly permeable. Less than one-tenth of an inch thick, skin is a porous membrane that is highly sensitive to toxic chemicals. What we put on our skin affects our health just as much as, if not more than, what we put in our mouths. Some toxic ingredients illegally remain unlabeled. Of particular concern are hormonal phthalates, and synthetic “aroma boosters” which strongly intensify organic fragrances. Some of these products are; 1. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth: This chemical is so strong and it is being used to clean concrete floors and for car wash stations. Using a skin care product containing this chemical won’t be good for your skin. 2. Parabens. This chemical is widely used to prevent the growth of mold, yeast, and bacteria in cosmetic products. This might sound good but it causes more harm than good, the use of this product brings an increased risk of breast cancer by possessing the estrogen-mimicking properties. Using this on your skin won’t fill well. 3. Sunscreen chemicals. The role of this chemical is to act as a sunscreen agent, absorbing ultraviolet light. These chemicals can easily be absorbed into the body causing cellular damage and body cancer. Definitely not a good idea to be present in a skincare product. This chemical is commonly known by the following names homosalate, benzophenone, PABA, avobenzone 4. Fragrance. This one sounds pretty scary from its name, the name fragrance was created to protect a secret formula of a company. Using this as the consumer, you should be putting a concoction containing tons of hazardous chemicals to your skin. This chemical can be found in commonly used products like shampoo, perfume, conditioner, and body wash. 5. Phthalates. This is a group of chemicals used to increase the softness and flexibility of plastics. Phthalates used in personal care products are dibutyl phthalates found in hairspray, nail polish, perfumes, and lotions. They are highly known to disrupt endocrine and have a high risk of early breast development in girls and breast cancer. 6. Triclosan. This is an antimicrobial chemical that’s widely used and known to be an endocrine disruptor. It is a skin irritant found in antibacterial soaps, toothpaste, and deodorants. 7. Petroleum/Liquid paraffin/Mineral Oil: This chemical is gotten from crude oil and it's being used in the production of most skin care products. Using a skin care product with this chemical can be hell.
